Men's Goals
People look at track and think that
it's an individual sport. For the most part, they are right. You run
by yourself, your actions help or hurt only you, and no teammate can pull you up
or drag you down unless you are on a relay. However, track is still one of
the most elegant team sports when it comes to togetherness. From the first
jump to the 4x400 meter relay, everyone on the team is supporting everyone
else. When it's all said and done, the team can take home a trophy, and
everyone, not just the people who scored, can say they were a part of it
all. Here are some goals that I have for the team, and I'm sure many would
agree with me if you asked other athletes as well.
-
Have fun. This is the number one
goal. If you're not having fun, why are you out here? It's not
like track and field is life or death. If it's torture, save yourself
some pain. So the number one goal is always to have fun, no matter how
cornball some of you may think that sounds.
-
Set personal records. The beauty of
track is that you don't have to race a person. You are constantly
racing a clock or jumping against a tape. If you want a sport that
defines versatility, track is it. The first person on the team and the
last can have the very same joy of finishing a race in a faster time than
they have before. So the second goal is to race, jump, and throw
better than our own personal records.
-
Place high at state. We did a Baldwin High first
last year when we won state with 64 points. Well, this year, all 64 of
those points are back, and we have a little more as well. Needless to
say, we're shooting for a high place again.
-
Represent our school. It is our job to
maintain a level of dignity and honor in order to represent track and our
school. There are many schools and sports out there that people
stereotype as a joke because the athletes are blind to their own
actions. We have an impact on the community whether we like it or
not. Show some integrity.
-
Lastly, we want to get better at something
everyday. Whether it be out form or our drills. Coach always
tells us to work diligently on the little things. If we can improve
our drills, our focus, or our physical preparation, we'll all be better
athletes.
