Men's
Record Watch
It's a great honor for
an athlete to have his/her name etched into the record books. Oftentimes
there are droughts in record smashing, but this year's senior class is a rare
breed. Here are some records that are in jeopardy, and I'll keep you
posted should some of these fall.
FIELD EVENTS:
Discus-Hugh Murphy
had a breakthrough season last year only to fall short of a state
berth. He's back and motivated, and Aaron Anderson's record toss is in
jeopardy.**RECORD FLASH**4/09/02-Murphy throws 154' at the baker relays.
Javelin-Two
throwers have a real shot of setting a new record for Baldwin High
School. Even more rare than breaking a record is the chance at setting
one. Hugh Murphy and Eric Brown are throwing a differently weighted
javelin that requires a record of its own. Darren Kurtz's seemingly
untouchable chuck of 236'10" will be safe for eternity. Whoever
is leading between these two stallions at the end of the year will own the
new javelin record.**RECORD FLASH**3/28/02-Brown throws 197'6" at the
Baldwin Invitational. 4/12/02-Murphy ousts Brown by throwing
198'7" at KT Woodman. 4/19/02-Brown takes back what was initially
his. By throwing 207'11", Brown not only wins the KU Relays, but
also reclaims the school record by 9 feet.
Long Jump-Mike
Curran was thrilled to jump 21'6" his senior year. He did this
back in 1999, and his record has remained intact since then. Well, my
good friend Eric Black is averting his field event attention to long
jump. His mark of 21' 1/2" last year placed him within reach of
tackling this record. **RECORD FLASH**3/28/02-Black jumps
20'10" at Baldwin Invitational.
Shot Put-Hugh
Murphy has a rare chance this year. He could feasibly be the school
record holder in all three throws. If he can topple Eric Brown in the
javelin, improve a few feet in discus, and improve only a little over a foot
in the shot put, he will have done it. He joined the 50 foot club in
the middle of last season, and he's scratched on throws that are in the
mid-50's. If he can put it together, he'll have one of the three.
TRACK EVENTS:
OPEN
100 Meters-Tyler
Inzer is the likely candidate to become the lone 100 meter record
holder. He's one of five on the list right now that have run 11.0
seconds in the 100. Inzer feels that this is his best event, and if he
can manage even a tenth of a second pr, he'll be the lone man on the totem
pole.**RECORD FLASH**4/19/02-At the Cardinal Relays, Tyler Inzer clocks a
blazing 11.1 to scare the school record. 4/26/02-At the Girard
Optimist Invitational Tyler ran a 11.0 by coach's time. The meet
timers were a little slower, but nonetheless, Tyler is still running very
well. It was too cold for a sprinter that night anyway.
200 Meters-Though
he feels that he has less of a chance at this record, Tyler Inzer could
crack this ancient record. Doug Delano ran his school record back in
the late 70's, and he would probably say it's time someone got it.
Tyler may surprise some people in this event.
400 Meters-Eric
Black split a 50.00 at the end of a decathlon last summer to set a new
personal record for himself in the 400 meters. What this means is that
after hours of competing in four other events, and an entire day in the sun,
he ran his personal best in a very grueling event. Can he break a
record that is only 4 tenths of second fast than his pr? I certainly
think so. In fact, I'd be willing to say it's not whether or not Eric
can get this record but how much can he lower it?**RECORD FLASH**
4/12/02-Eric Black runs a 50.5 in the open 400. 4/19/02-KU Relays:
Eric Black dashes another 50 point but falls short of his sub-50 goals.
800 Meters-This is
what makes track fun. As in the javelin, we have an intra-squad
rivalry. Eric and I battled it out last year in the 800, and he got
the best of me. We race four times, and I only beat him once.
That one time I beat him was at regionals where I tied the school record at
1:57.7 seconds. Then, a week later, he beat me by a full second to
take the state title and the school record with a 1:57.5. He's back
and he's better. I'm back and I'd like to think that I'm going to give
him a run for his money. Anytime Eric and I race, it will be extremely
fun and extremely competitive. Also, anytime we race, the record is in
grave danger. When two guys can push each other in practice, they
stand a much better shot of running fast than a guy who trains alone.
**RECORD WATCH** 4/26/02-I beat Eric to the punch when it came to
breaking two minutes. I ran a 1:59.55 at Girard which is still a far
cry from his 1:57.5.
1600 Meters-I set
my pr and school record last year at state with a 4:22.99. I not only
hope to lower that but to lower it significantly. If I stay healthy,
this record along with my 3200 record, should be slashed.**RECORD FLASH**
4/09/02-I split a 4:24 on the 4x1600. 4/19/02-I anchored the DMR to
our 9th place finish at the KU Relays. I split a 4:25 for the actual
mile which is more or less a 4:23.7 for the 1600. 4/26/02-I
thought it was a little too cold to be running pr's, but at the Girard
Invite, a meet that I have ran my pr at four years in a row now, I chugged
along for a two second drop and ran a 4:21.00. (63, 67, 66, 65)
3200 Meters-I fell
two seconds short of my 3200 meter record last year. The record is
9:36.41 and I ran just over two seconds slower than that at state.
This year at K.T. Woodman and KU Relays, I hope to lower this record the
most of any of the ones I have a chance at.**RECORD FLASH** 4/12/02-I ran a
9:37.12 at KT Woodman. 4/19/02-KU Relays two mile: I ran on the
heals of the eventual second place finisher for 4 and a half laps. I
split a 4:38 for the first mile and finished with an eleven second school
record 9:25.76.
RELAYS
4x100-Although the
guys lost two men, they have new wheels in Brian Lauridsen. If they
can find one more fella, they should have a chance of lowering the mark that
they set last year at 44.40 seconds.**RECORD FLASH** 4/19/02-Cardinal
Relays: four young men, Micah Mason, Brian Lauridsen, Yancy Richards, and
Tyler Inzer run a 44.67, the closest to the record that they've been all
year.
4x800-If we can
take my pr, Eric's pr, Glen's pr, and Hans' pr, we have the school record
right now. With that said, all it is going to take is the right
day. We are fully capable, if we healthy, of breaking that school
record. We will try for it at KU Relays and as many other meets as we
can afford.**RECORD FLASH** 4/20/02-We took our first stab at this record
with a stacked relay. We ran an 8:19 and looked a little dead doing
it. We'll try again at Wellsville.
4x1600-For the
last four years, including this one, we have had this record within our
grasps. The tough thing about this record is that it can only be run
one time. The second meet of the year, Baker Relays, has this unusual
event. We have as many as seven guys that we could put together to
break this record. All we need to have this year is a good weather day
and this record will fall. We need to average 4:52 per person, and we
have myself at a pr of 4:22, Eric Black in the low 4:40's, Glen Stansberry
at 4:49, and then a handful of guys just under five. If you do the
math, this record doesn't stand a chance. We're mostly healthy and it
should be a given at Baker Relays. Come out and cheer us on if you
can.**RECORD FLASH** 4/09/02-We broke it. Eric handed off to Johnny,
who handed off to Glen, who handed off to me. We ran a
18:55.33.
Distance Medley Relay-Well
shut my mouth and paint me red. I didn't put this record up as one to
be watched in the beginning of the season because quite frankly it never
crossed my mind that we had a shot at it. Well, after yesterday's
performance at the KU Relays, we lowered the record a full ten
seconds. Great job guys. The new record is a 10:54.18.
