Baldwin Throws

Javelin Kings have carried Baldwin.  Baldwin High School has a decorated throwing history, particularly in javelin.  Baldwin Track & Field has been put on the map in the last 15 years because of people like Darren Kurtz (school record holder in the javelin), Stan Johanning, Eric Brown (ranked 4th in the nation this year), and Hugh Murphy.  These men have shattered records in meets and within our school.  Hugh Murphy and Eric Brown became the first two individuals to place first and second in the same event in the same year for Baldwin High School at state track.  With these two horses returning, the Frontier League and the state of Kansas had better look out.

Shot and Discus led by Murphy.  He's a 6' 2.5" man of iron.  Each morning after his bowl of rusty nails, Hugh Murphy eats, sleeps, and breaths throwing.  That's during track season at least.  Hugh is a scholarly gentleman in school, and he plans on attending Brown University next fall.  He had a great season of progress last year in the discus and shot, making it to state in the put and falling short, placing fourth place at regionals, in the disc.  Somehow he's managed to increase his size and motivation.  He'll definitely be a contender for a state medal in all three throws once it's all said and done.

Young throwers ready to fill Hugh and Eric's shoes.  Two names immediately stick out in the freshman class, Luke Halford and Kyle Ruona.  Luke had a tremendous eighth grade season.  In the latter half of the season he chased the eighth grade discus record, which is owned by Wade Allen currently thrower for Emporia State.  Kyle, a monstrous frosh, plans to make his debut Thursday in all three throws, though shot put was his specialty in junior high.

Ladies lack numbers but not heart.  The girl's team may not have the top dogs that the boy's have been blessed with, but they have some of the hardest working throwers this side of the Mississippi.  Renaissance woman Casey Millstein has already been mentioned as a triple jumper (oh yeah, she's a high jumper too), but what's this?  She throws discus too?  That's right, she's the top discus thrower on the girl's side.  She'll be attempting one of the oddest doubles in track and field this year, competing in both the triple jump and discus in every meet.

Brown follows Brown.  Many know the name Eric Brown and javelin go together, but did you know that Emily is the best girl's javelin thrower?  No?  Well, not many people do, but you should look out for this 6'2" tower of terror.  Don't let that lumbering stride fool you (just kidding Emma); she can chuck the spear with the best of them.  With javelin phenom Kendra Wecker from Marysville, Kansas out of the way, gals like Emily have a real chance of medalling or even winning state.
