Women's Race of the Week As in the guy's section, I want to recognize a breakthrough racer each week because oftentimes they are never recognized. It shouldn't have to take a state champion to catch the eye of the public; there are many great athletes having bigger breakthroughs each meet than I ever have. They just don't get the same coverage because their PR is a little slower than the headline person's. Well, I will try to do justice to the little guy by posting what I felt was the best race of the week after each meet. WEEK 1: 3/28/02 BALDWIN INVITATIONAL I don't know as much about the girls team as I do the guys, but I think I've come to a fair conclusion about this week's Race of the Week. I hope this doesn't look bad, but I've picked another distance runner for the Race of the Week. Phil Wagner won the honors on the boy's side, and now Erica Ogle won those same honors on the girl's. She was unable to win a single race last year when my sister, Megan Noonan, was in with her. Now that Megan has graduated and is off running for Pitt-State, it's a whole new ballgame. Erica won both the mile and two mile, but her two mile was the more impressive. She won her first BIT 3200 meter title in a time of 12:47, almost 30 seconds ahead of the next gal. She'd tell you that her time wasn't anything to dance in the streets about, but to win any race by that much is quite an accomplishment. Great job, Erica. WEEK 2: 4/09/02 & 4/12/02 BAKER RELAYS & KT WOODMAN When it rains it pours. Erica Ogle has earned her second Race of the Week award in a row. I don't plan on giving this award to the same person week after week but when you do what Erica did it needs to be recognized. Erica's Race of the Week this week was her half mile at KT Woodman. She ran a phenomenal two mile in 12:09, a near personal best mile in 5:52, and then had the strength to come back and run like a veteran half miler clocking a 2:33. That last one was a pr by the way. What Erica did, and I speak from experience, is nothing short of amazing. I've never seen nor heard of a person running a personal best in an event when that event comes third in the day. Congratulations Erica, and keep it up. WEEK 3: 4/19/02 & 4/20/02 CARDINAL RELAYS & KU RELAYS I apologize for not having any of the girl's awards up for the last two weeks. I will try to post them soon. WEEK 4: 4/22/02 & 4/26/02 SPRING HILL INVITE & GIRARD INVITE TBA |
