Women's
Record Watch
The women's team
may not have the depth that the guys have, but don't tell them that. They
are a group of willing, hardworking girls that can accomplish almost
anything. Their list is a little smaller than the guys', but that doesn't
mean they won't get just as many records. That just means they
haven't come out of the woodwork yet for me to put them on this page. But
here are some hopeful returnees.
Field Events:
Javelin-The guys
aren't the only ones getting a new javelin. The girls will have a
newly weighted javelin that forces one more record to be retired.
Emily Brown has the same chance that her brother has to set a new school
record. If she can lead Baldwin High at the end of the year, she'll be
the new record holder. Does she have a pretty good shot at this?
I think so. Who do we have to thank for this javelin gene? I'm
not sure, but I think their names rhyme with Dan and Jill.
Triple Jump-Casey
Millstein capped a great year in basketball. Her success there hasn't
watered down her aspirations for track. She has a dream. She
wants to pr in triple jump, discus, and high jump. If she can do this,
she will be close to three school records, but her closest will be in the
triple. She's closing in on this mark, and once she gets her feet wet,
she'll probably have it. There's not much this gal can't do if she
puts her mind to it.
High Jump-Emily
Brown is going to be a household name by the time I'm done talking about
her. She truly is amazing. She's soft spoken when you first meet
her, but she carries a big stick. A BIG STICK FOR BREAKING
RECORDS! She has a personal record of 5'4" in high jump.
That puts her knocking on the door of a new school record in that
event. Can she get it? Well, as long as mandatory tendons remain
to function in her legs and heels, I think she's looking good.
**3/28/02RECORD FLASH** Senior Casey Millstein has proven that she
won't go silently into the night when it comes to having a say in the high
jump record. After the BIT, she showed that she can hang with the
best. She cleared 5' and Emily cleared 4'10". Both
Millstein and Brown will be battling for this spot now.
Pole Vault-This
relatively new events is about to see its second record holder in 4
years. Sophomore Jamie Lawrenz soared past 7' last year and only has a
foot and half more to reach the school record of 8'6". This last
foot and a half may seem insurmountable, but it's really not. She's
new to the event and has unmeasured potential. All it will take to get
this girl over that mark is a hefty crowd and a lot of cheering.
Track Events:
Open:
400 Meters-Rachel
Miles has one of the smoothest strides ever to grace Baldwin Track.
She is the type of person that when you see her run you just know she's in
her element. She set a school record in the 400 last year at state
track in the finals. But there's just one catch. This would have
been picturesque if she was running her last race as a senior. It's
just cool when she's a FRESHMAN! She has this year and two more to
slash her pr.
800 Meters-Sound
familiar? Rachel Miles is the fastest half gal this school has seen
since Becky Demarest in 1999. Rachel has clocked between four and
five seconds under the 2:30 mark, and she has the potential to knock another
5-6 off of that. The school record is right around 2:24 so Rachael
should have a very legitimate shot at taking that one down.
1600 Meters-It may
be a long shot but soph Erica Ogle has the best chance at breaking the
longer distance records. She has a pr some 26 seconds slower than the
school record, but with the jumps of improvement that she's made in the last
year, I wouldn't put any record out of her sight. Including the 1600
and the 800.
3200 Meters-If
Ogle wants a record, this is her best chance. My sister set the school
record a year ago after breaking her old record of 11:44.33. She broke
and rebroke her own records and finally settled on a 11:32 or somewhere near
there. Ogle has dropped below the 12 minute mark only a few times, but
like I said, she's an animal. If she gets in the right races, watch
out.
RELAYS:
4x100 Meter Relay-They
may have lost Melanie Pelot, their only consistant sub-13 second hundred
meter runner, but the girls team has just as good a shot at rebreaking the
record they set a year ago. That record is 51.9, and they return first
leg Leah Clay, second leg Rachel Miles, and third leg Erica Johnson.
They have a handful of freshman and newcomers to the track team to choose
from when filling that crucial anchor spot.
