Baldwin Sprints Girl's 4x100 stars of last year's sprinting scene: Last year the girls 4x100 team consisting of senior Melanie Pelot, freshman Rachael Miles, sophomore Erica Johnson, and freshman Leah Clay broke the 4x100 record and toted home a state medal. These two accomplishments place the girls on top of the Baldwin sprinting scene. Pelot was the nucleus of that studly 4x100, but the girls have recruited some fast women for this year's team. A possible replacement is freshman Missy Westgate. She's a fireball willing to run any event her coach puts her in. Harris and Lawrenz lead the hurdling scene: Kelli Harris, replacing her older sister Kalie, is likely to make an impact for the girl's team this year. She was a tremendous junior high athlete and is looking to make her mark in 100 meter hurdles this year. She'll have a team mate to help her along the way. Jamie Lawrenz got her feet wet last year and is planning on competing in the event again this year. These two forces could evolve into the next generation of Baldwin girl hurdlers. Baldwin's male sprinting woes. Baldwin has a unique problem with sprinting. When you walk into Baldwin's High School gym and look up at the record boards, you see two things: 1. You see a hundred meter record plate that has five names on it (including senior Tyler Inzer). 2. And you see two antiques, the 200 meter record and the 400 meter record. These problems may have met their solution. Senior Eric Black and senior Tyler Inzer are primed and motivated. Men's 100 record dying to go down. Tyler, a strong sprinter who thinks the 200 is too long, has the 100 meter record in his crosshairs. "I thought I could get it last year, but I tied it. I know I can get it this year," said the 5'10" 195lb. man of steel. He'll have his first stab at the school record this Thursday at Baldwin's opener the BIT. Men's 400 record quivering. Eric Black is a unique character altogether. Black has represented the United States at the Youth World Championships in the octathlon, run a school record 1:57.5 in the half-mile, high jumped 6'2 3/4", and split a 50.00 seconds in the 400 for his fifth event in a decathlon. Last year he also clocked one of the fastest times in 4A for the 110 meter high hurdles. Is there anything this track machine is incapable of? Not likely. And he has his sights on the 400 meter record as one of his top priorities this season. His personal record of 50.00 seconds is nipping at the heels of the 49.6 mark set by Mike Carriker in 1972. Baldwin's broken men's 4x100. Baldwin lost 2 of its four links to the 2001 state qualifying men's 4x100 meter relay. They graduated one and released one to baseball. Tyler Inzer is the leading returnee, but he has a field of hopefuls to pick from to fill his squad. Senior Yancy Richards, junior Brian Lauridsen, and sophomore Micah Mason (also returning from last year's team) will all fight daily to earn and keep spots on this prestigious team. Will Baldwin have a men's 4x400? That's a good question. In recent years Baldwin has lacked both the manpower and the willpower to put together a true mile relay. In the last three years Baldwin has struggled to place in large meets with this event and hasn't dropped below 3:35 for ages. Could this be the year? Do they have the dogs that want to train and are willing to run one of the most painful races on the track? We'll see.
